CompUSA Donates 25 Computer Setups at Latinos Unidos

Posted by: Sr. Editor Lonny Paul on Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Latinos Unidos - ComputersCompUSA was delighted to participate in a ‘Classroom Makeover’ which culminated today at it’s unveiling and attendance by local dignitaries, including the Mayor of Miami, Manny Diaz. Filmed as a special for the series ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ on DirecTV – the Latinos Unidos center in the Allapatah area of Miami had a $250,000 makeover with nearly a completely new facility.

CompUSA decided that these chlidren who were using Pentium (yes, the original based Pentium) computers needed something with a little more ‘kick.’ 25 Systemax Intel Quad-Core based systems with a terabyte of storage, 4 gig of memory, wireless keyboards and mice topped off with 19 inch Acer widescreen LCDs are now ready for use by the community as well as 4 Lexmark network printers.

A complete report and tons of photos will be available shortly, but we wanted to share the photos we took at the event to give you a glimpse into this great community outreach event.

A big thank-you to Maria Corzo-Garcia for her kind hospitality and all the great work she does for her community.

According to Maria, the public library up the street has 3 computers for use by the entire neighborhood where there is rarely a computer in the home. Maria said that children wait in long lines for those 3 computers adding more frustration. At Latinos Unidos, adults come in and use the computers in the morning for various things then in the afternoon the children rapidly fill the seats. These new computers will provide them with a great experience and the tool to help learn skills needed to build a great foundation.

The joint press-release can be read here.
