Having bought my wife this Olympus Stylus 1010, I am a little bit familiar with it and must respond to some of the review points above.
First, why is she “gushing” over “an amazing 10.1 Megapixel sensor” that at least 20 other cameras already have (admittedly, the 7 Xs zoom is very good), and what is so “groundbreaking” about “the Olympus Stylus 1010 Digital Camera incorporates a groundbreaking sensor-shift image stabilization technology”.Again, many cameras already have the sensor shift technology, it is hardly ground breaking, and according to some professionals, not as good as the optical stabilization used by Canon and some others. Furthermore, many commentators on digital camera sites are bemoaning the fact that manufacturers are promoting the hype that more pixels are better (they are not necessarily, particularly when they are placed on the same size CCD as the prior model).
She comments that the camera can record video clips in AVI format at a 640X480 resolution at 30 FPS. What she doesn’t mention is that there are better, less memory intensive modes such as MPEG4 now AND the Olympus will only record 10 seconds of video at this resolution at a time. That is right, only 10 seconds!
She also indicates that the 14.7 MB of built in memory and XD card is another great thing. NOT! First the 14.7 is a pitiful amount of built in memory.(Other cameras have as much 40-50 MB). Furthermore, about 90% of the users of XD have commented about the slowness of the Card and its higher price. Maybe that is why Olympus has provided this camera with a Micro SD to XD adaptor.
Having said all that, the 1010 is still a very good camera with some very good features but also has drawbacks that almost took it out of my consideration for purchase. (I may still return it for a camera that has better Video capabilities.)

I’m really getting tired of these “reviews” sounding like puff-pieces written by the camera companies’ marketing people. Which they likely are.

Fred, Barry,
I wanted to thank you for your comments. Here at CompUSA News our editors are very excited about their new columns and readers and sometimes may be a bit gushy about a new product they were able to play with for a little while. They are like kids in a candy store.
Barry, I want to assure you these are not written by manufacturer’s, their PR departments or marketing people. These are truly written by fair minded individuals who are attempting to inform and provide overviews of features and benefits of ownership and basic commentary.
I have made several edits to the original post and added additional material based on your input.
It is through this ‘community’ aspect of interaction that we here at the All-New CompUSA hope to allow a constant evolution of our content and forums to best serve what you, as our site visitors, perhaps customers, want.
I am also intrigued about your note Fred regarding XD performance, which I haven’t heard about before and I’ve never had a camera which uses XD cause I didn’t want another format I needed to have around. Now that there is a Micro SD to XD adapter (which I have seen and never thought anything of before) I guess I need not be afraid!
I still must admit one thing about MicroSD - I have no idea how they get all that memory on a 8 or 16GB chip on that tiny little card. Wow.
Once again guys - thanks for your feedback - and we hope you continue to do so in the future!

Re the Olympus Stylus comment I made about only 10 seconds of 640X480 resolution movie recording. That is still true, for now, but a recent conversation with the Olympus people informs me that they are releasing a new Xd card called the ” XD M Plus” which, according to Olympus, will allow the 1010 to record in the higher movie resolution up to the capacity of the card. Yeah!
